Artist Drew Struzan designed this memorable image when on staff at Pacific Eye & Ear, the famed design studio who produced a number of widely-recognized covers for Warner/Atlantic Records, including the Bee Gee’s Main Course, Black Sabbath’s Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and many others. It was one of Rolling Stone Magazine’s "Top 100 Album Covers of All Time".
Welcome to My Nightmare was Alice Cooper’s (the singer, not the band) first solo album and, later, also the title of a concert video of the elaborate stage show that Cooper and his touring ensemble produced to for his promotional record tour. The show was an amazing piece of rock theater, taking the band and the audience on a journey through the disturbing life and imagination of “Steven”.
Elaborate costumes, props (including a huge spider and a cyclops) and sets – in the young boy’s bedroom and in a graveyard – all served to provide a context to a concert soundtrack that combined songs from the new record (including the hits “Welcome to My Nightmare” and “Only Women Bleed”) with a number of classic Alice Cooper tunes.
While some special-interest groups worked hard to censor Cooper’s music and stage antics, this show brought his music and sense of theater to the mainstream, setting the stage for nearly every large-scale tour to follow. Truly a trendsetter (and good golfer, to boot!). |
