While it
is best known as the Rolling Stones “album with the zipper” (designed by Andy
Warhol and John Pasche, based on a Billy Name photograph), 1971’s Sticky
Fingers was also the album where Mick Taylor was introduced to the line up
AND for being their first recording on their own imprint (distributed by Warner
Bros.) after leaving Decca records. It also features the first use of Mr.
Pasche’s Tongue & Lips logo on the cover.
The
record contained a number of now-classic RS compositions, including "Brown
Sugar", "Wild Horses", "Bitch" and "Can’t You
Hear Me Knocking", which featured the late Billy Preston on organ.
Fans were
enthralled with the music, shooting the singles (and, ultimately, the
multi-platium-selling LP) to #1 and voting to have the album place #63 and #46,
respectively, on Rolling Stone Magazine’s and VH-1’s lists of the
"Greatest Albums of All Time".
Bill
Wyman liked the name so much that he named his High St., Kensington (London) music-themed restaurant “Sticky
Fingers Cafe”.
