This 12"w x 15-1/2"h color print is from a unique "gold edition" of 400, custom-printed on heavy stock and signed and numbered by Karl Ferris. Unmatted/unframed ( Click here for framing options and costs) Donovan was slated to play a full week of concerts at The Saville in London from April 24 thru April 30, 1967, and so club owner Brian Epstein turned to his house photographer/designer Karl Ferris to help out. Karl was shooting the cover for Donovan's A Gift From A Flower To A Garden box set (the first of its kind!) and his music film Wear Your Love Like Heaven and so he and Donovan and Jenny Boyd (Donovan's girlfriend and Pattie Boyd-Harrison's sister) travelled out to a beautiful spot in Cornwall to take the shot that served as the basis for this poster.
According to Karl, the designs he created for the records and films were "Psychedelic Pre-Raphaelite" in theme - I just think that they're beautiful, don't you?
Glasgow's Donovan Leitch grew out of the folk, jazz and pop scenes in the UK in the 1960s and grew to prominence due to his all-encompassing "flower-power" approach to music, incorporating styles from all over the world into a trippy mix that was loved by millions of fans. The "Sunshine Superman" collaborated with top musicians from all over the world - The Beatles, Bob Dylan (captured in the film Don't Look Back), Joan Baez, etc. and enjoyed a hugely successful run of hit recordings and concert appearances from 1967 thru 1969.
