The pride of Barnhead, SC had four records in the RS Magazine "500 Greatest Albums of All Time", including the legendary Live At The Apollo (1963). His influence on R&B, funk, rock, hip-hop and jazz was undeniable, as was his ability to make hit records decade after decade (he was in his 6th as a recording artist, beginning with his 1956 hit with The High-Flying Heads "Please, Please, Please", until his passing in December, 2006).
Recent honors included those from The Kennedy Center (a 2003 recipient), a 7-foot bronze statue in Augusta, GA (although legal troubles delayed the ceremony for a year), and the renaming of Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center - now known as "The James B Arena".
