According to Piper - I wanted to do photos of Soul Savers with Mark Lanegan (the singer’s latest project), so I worked it out with my friend Keith Hagan and Ray McCarville in London to do a shoot of the band. Little did I know that Steve Gullick was a guitarist in the band. It made me quite nervous as he’s also one of my favorite photographers (http://www.gullickphoto.com/).

The Soul Savers were having many complicated “internal issues” by the time I showed up at The Troubador to shoot them, so the shoot didn’t go too well, to say the least. Thankfully, about 2 months later, Matt Turner, the pictures editor of Mojo Magazine in the UK gave Plan B magazine (also from the UK)  my information and Sarah asked me to do a photo shoot of the Gutter Twins, so I ended up getting another opportunity to shoot Lanegan, with the added bonus being that I would be shooting Dulli, too.

These guys aren’t the warmest bunch of bees, but I got the shots that I needed. Dulli is sweet and Mark is how you might imagine him to be - dark and brooding.  He’s an excellent subject, though. We shot the photos at Greg Dulli’s bar in Echo Park, California called The Short Stop. This is why the photo has all the interesting police patches up on the wall - it was a real Hill Street Blues bar back in the 1950’s. I think that something really crazy went down there once - like a big gangster shoot out or something – I can’t remember (Editor’s Note – the bar used to serve drinks to off-duty cops, but after the Rampart scandal, new investors – including Dulli – took over. The bar retained some of the original décor, including the gun lockers).

Anyway, classic guys deserve a classic photo :-)

Early in 2008, indie veterans Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Queens of the Stone Age, etc.) and Greg Dulli (Afgan Whigs, The Twilight Singers) released their latest Gutter Twins record album called Saturnalia on the indie stalwart label Sub Pop.
