Photographer Jim Haughton's iconic cover portrait of Billy is as psychologically and emotionally complex as the songs - both, unforgettably rich with symbolism and innuendo. "We all have a face that we hide away forever and we take them out and show ourselves when everyone has gone," sings Billy on the album's title track.

Released in September 1977, The Stranger was Billy Joel's fifth studio album and first to hit the Top 10. The success generated by four charting singles - "Just The Way You Are" (#1), "Movin Out/Anthony's Song" (#40), "She's Always a Woman" (#17) and "Only The Good Die Young" (#24) - launched Joel into the "superstar" category and landed him two Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year (for "Just The Way You Are").

The album spent 6 weeks at #2 on the US Album charts and has sold well over 10 million copies to date. Regarded by many critics and fans as Joel's finest work, in 2003 the album was ranked number 67 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. It was also one of the first - if not THE first - commercial recordings released on a CD in the US. A musical, titled Movin' Out, conceived by choreographer Twyla Tharp and based on themes derived from Billy Joel songs, hit theater stages in 2002 and has toured nationally and internationally ever since.
