The captions for the two early 1969 shows read -

On the left - "Friday Feb. 2 Big Brother and the Holding Co  The Hook  392-4501"

On the right - "Saturday Feb. 3 The Box Tops Plus The Hook Light Show  392-4501"

According to Bob - "The original for this poster was done in  black and white. I always thought it would look great colored, hence the colorful reprint!  The gig was at a club called The Cheetah, which was a famous ballroom at the end of the pier (1 Navy Steet) in Venice, California. I did a lot of work for them when I was down there in '68 and '69, and I remember sharing a Southern Comfort backstage with Janis after the show! "

The former home of the Venice Ballroom, which was a swanky dance hall popular during the Swing era, The Cheetah also put on shows with The Doors, Blue Cheer, The Nazz (aka Alice Cooper), the Chambers Brothers and a host of other West Coast bands - even once hosting Piper at the Gates of Dawn-era Pink Floyd - but an arson fire in 1970 led to its demise. The club was also praised for its excellent sound system and high-quality light show.

Bob Masse is from Canada's West coast and has been producing concert posters since the 1960s. While attending art school in Vancouver, British Columbia, he began his career doing posters for the folk acts that came through town, in exchange for free drinks, tickets, and the opportunity to meet the musicians.

Bob was greatly influenced by the art and music scenes in Los Angeles and San Francisco, where he spent considerable time in the late 1960s, producing posters and album covers for various bands of the day. His work from this time is highly sought by collectors.

As you can see, Bob continues to produce pieces for contemporary performers, such as Tori Amos, the Smashing Pumpkins, Alanis Morrisette and many more.
