Released in 1966, Pet Sounds is one of the – if not THE – most-acclaimed (by critics and fans) pop music LP in the modern era. Brian Wilson wrote the music and lyrics after he stopped touring with the band so that he could focus on creating a studio masterpiece – something that would stand up to, and exceed, any similar product by the most-popular band at the time – The Beatles. The results of his efforts has been voted either #1 or #2 in the “greatest records of all time” lists by Rolling Stone, TIME, Mojo, NME and many other print and online publications.

It’s been said that the studio wizardry exhibited on Pet Sounds was a huge influence on The Beatles’ next effort – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band – and the recording’s place in American music was sealed when it was chosen as one of the first 50 recordings to be included in the National Registry at the Library of Congress.

While Sgt. Peppers was wrapped in a package featuring Sir Peter Blake’s design and Michael Cooper’s famous photograph, Pet Sounds was, unfortunately, not afforded the same degree of artistry when the cover was chosen for its retail packaging. The cover image was captured by Capitol Records’ staff photographer, George Jerman, during an outing he and the band made in early 1965 to the San Diego Zoo. Jerman shot a number of photos while the band was goofing around with the goats in the “petting corner” of the children’s zoo section, and it is one of these shots that ultimately graced the cover. The back of the record displays a photo-collage of all of the band’s members, some of which were taken during a previous tour of Japan. God only knows….
