Formed in Birmingham, UK in 1968 as a blues/hard rock (and occassional jazz) band. They were later named Earth, but needed to change their name when another band claimed the name. Bassist (and fan of horror/black magic novels) Geezer Butler had written a song called "Black Sabbath", so they agreed to take on that name instead.

While practicing in a studio near a movie theater that played horror films, the boys discussed the notion of writing music for those movies and thought that they might try that approach as a way to differentiate their sound. They then set down to write the songs for their self-titled debut album, which was released in 1970 and is now considered (by many) as the first real "heavy metal" recording.

The apocalyptic song themes were so influential going forward that this record is always ranked in every publication's "Top 500" listing (e.g., Rolling Stone's 2003 list ranked it at #241).

I just love the cover - it is so beautifully creepy... hahahahahahaha!
