"Band Aid" was the name of the all-star group assembled to record the original single "Do They Know It's Christmas?/ Feed The World", a tune written by Boomtown Rat Bob Geldof and Ultravox's Midge Ure.
Recorded and filmed between 11am and 7pm on November 25th, 1984 by a group consisting of almost 40 of the UK and Ireland's best-known pop stars, Geldof had hoped to raise $100,000 for charities from sales of the recording. Underestimating the public's reaction to his efforts, the record went on to sell over three million copies in the UK alone (over a million the first week!), becoming the best-selling single there ever (to that point), and raised over $10 million worldwide.
Interestingly, after Geldof announced that ALL money raised by the sale of the recording would be donated to the cause, he was faced with a stand-off with the British Government, which refused to waive the taxes on the sales of the single. Geldof then attacked Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the press and, sensing the public outcry, the government backed down and donated the tax back to the charity.
Soon after, Live Aid was announced and the rest is history. | | | |
