Bob Geldof was so moved by the plight of Ethiopia's famine-stricken population after viewing reporter Michael Buerks' BBC television news report on the subject that he decided to try and raise money using his contacts in pop music.
First came his all-star recording of "Do They Know It's Christmas/Feed The World", which went on to be a massive single in early 1985 and raised millions for his cause. Then, in early 1985, the idea of a benefit concert was raised and, on July 13, 1985, twin concerts in London and Philadelphia were staged in an event that was watched on TV by over 1.5 BILLION people worldwide, with donations from the effort again exceeding Geldof's expectations (nearly $40 million during and immediately following the event). With frequent on-air appeals made during the live show, Geldof reminded viewers of the motive for the occasion: "Don't go to the pub tonight. Please stay in and give us your money. There are people dying now."
The list of performers at both concerts was truly impressive, featuring sets by U2, the Pretenders, Queen, Madonna, Paul McCartney, Neil Young, The Who, Judas Priest, Duran Duran, and many others.
