The Mars Volta - 'Deloused in the Comatorium'is comprised of songs written to describe an experience in El Paso concerning a friend who went in and out of coma. The songs describe both external and internal events as their friend heads slowly towards death, his mind dragged down by inner demons (as much as we understand it).

The lyrics are a fiery staccato mixture of colourful bizarre images, like a crazed stream of consciousness, not always clear in meaning but very rich in imagery. The music is equally impressive, using jazz and rock laced with echoes of progressive rock and Latin American - a heady mix indeed, characterised by extended improvisations, soaring vocals and intense guitars.

Very expressive, very stimulating.

Please find attached our pale attempts to reflect all the energy and implications of the narrative by a head in a dish (bobbing/rolling to and fro, in and out of the coma) and a jellyfish head whose entrails of the mind resemble the twisted tentacles of a jellyfish stretching up to break the water and emerge from coma darkness - Storm Thorgerson
