Unmatted/unframed

Begun in 1973 after agreeing to record an album of late 50s-early 60s classic rock covers, Lennon’s Rock’n’Roll was finally released in mid-1975 after a series of delays caused by way-too-much alcohol, pending lawsuits, threatened deportation, a separation from Yoko, the production of another record (1974’s Walls & Bridges) and a many month-long game of “Find the Masters” played with producer and overall nutcase Phil Spector.

The record has Lennon doing what I like the best – playing and singing delightful ditties that were his favorite kind of music – real “roots” Rock and Roll – and rendering them wonderfully with the talent and energy that only years of singing your favorite songs can supply. Only four songs were included from the early Spector-produced sessions; the rest were redone after Lennon finally had a chance to hear the original records and then quickly brought back his Walls and Bridges band to back him on the remaining cuts.

Lennon’s version of Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me” was an instant hit and the record reached the Top 10 album charts in both the U.S. and the U.K. Later that year, Lennon reconciled with Yoko and son Sean was born that October, and so his commitments to fatherhood would mean that this was to be the last record he’d do until 1980’s Double Fantasy.

The picture used on the cover was a shot of Lennon taken by photographer Jurgen Vollmer during the Beatles’ earlier days in Hamburg, Germany. Lennon’s assistant/”Long Weekend” girlfriend May Pang had seen the pictures on display at a 1974 Beatles convention and told John about them. Vollmer and Lennon were then reunited and Lennon chose one of those images to be used as the principal image on this record’s cover.
