"Spit It Out" was released as a single in September 2000 on Roadrunner Records. Slipknot was the major label debut album by Slipknot, a 9-piece “nu-metal” outfit from Des Moines, Iowa, formed in 1996 and discovered and signed by famed producer Ross Robinson, who also produced for Limp Bizkit and Korn.

The 1999 album release was noted for its salty language, counter-culture lyrics, and a dark, aggressive sound more akin to death metal than other bands at the time. Its “clean” version was actually uncensored and the CD booklet featured the band’s commentary on censorship (“the absolute fascism of America”). Slipknot was voted one of the "Heaviest Albums of All Time" in 2001 by Q Magazine.
