The induction ceremony took place on 1/17/90 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, NYC. It was a huge induction ceremony - other great performers also inducted that night were The Kinks, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, the Four Tops, the Platters, Hank Ballard, and Bobby Darin and the Four Seasons. In addition, the songwriting teams of Gerry Goffin and Carole King and Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland were inducted, as were musicians Louis Armstrong, Charlie Christian and Ma Rainey.

The Who were inducted after a fine tribute speech by U2's Bono ("every great band needs a great nose - it's essential equipment,") and the late, great drummer Keith Moon's daughter Mandy proudly pointed out that her father had been banned from the Waldorf-Astoria for bad behavior. The pony-tailed Pete T. wisely noted that he saw the band's role in rock history as "an irritant''. The band then played rousing versions of "Substitute" and "We Won't Get Fooled Again", under the baton of bandleader Paul Schaeffer, with Carol King on tambourine.
