The Bootleg Series Vol. 4: Bob Dylan Live 1966, The
"Royal Albert Hall" Concert is a 2-CD live record package from Bob
Dylan's legendary "world tour" in 1966 and, up until its release in
1998 (32 years after the performance), one of the most famous – and widely-shared
– bootleg recordings in the annals of rock music.
Not actually recorded at London’s
Royal Albert Hall, the record highlights a 5/17/66 performance in Manchester,
U.K. during which he worked
to show audiences that he was not simply a strolling troubadour with an
acoustic guitar. He and his Band (then called The Hawks) played the 2nd
half of the show plugged in, rocking through electric arrangements of "Like a Rolling Stone", “Tell Me,
Momma”, “One Too Many Mornings” and "Ballad of a Thin Man”, much to the
amazement/chagrin of many purists in the audience.
The gold-selling album debuted on the Billboard 200 in
October, 1998 at #31 (it rose to #19 on the UK
record charts).
Shortly after completing the Spring leg of his tour, Dylan
was involved in a motorcycle accident that led to the cancellation of the
remainder of the tour and a long rehabilitation during which he continued to
work with his band, recordings of which would be released on The Basement Tapes
series.
