Coldplay’s debut album – Parachutes – was released in 7/2000, not long after their single “Shiver” did well in the UK charts (and drew the attention of MTV, who put their videos into regular rotation). They followed up their early Summer 2000 with the release of their singles “Yellow” and “Trouble”, both of which charted very well and that exposure, along with some decent press (who liked it that a pop band could “keep it real” in the midst of all the pop mush out at the time!) and their appearances in UK “new talent” showcases helped set the stage for the release of Parachutes.
The album debuted at #1 on the UK Albums chart and went on to sell 2 million records in the U.S. over the next 2 years. The record earned Mr. Martin and his bandmates the 2002 Grammy Award for “Best Alternative Music Album”.
