Dreamboat Annie is the platinum-selling debut record by
Heart, released in 1976 on Mushroom Records (and later re-released by Capitol
Records). The record’s popularity was buoyed by three straight hit singles – “Crazy
on You” (#35), “Magic Man” (#9), “Dreamboat Annie” (#42) – and it ultimately
reached #7 on the Top Album charts in the US.
The record served to establish the Wilson
sisters and their bandmates as a top-notch hard rock and roll band, cut from
the same “loud and proud” cloth as Led Zeppelin (who greatly influenced them),
The Who and Black Sabbath. And, like those bands from which they drew their
influences, they were also moved to produce melodic rock songs and ballads that
opened their works to a wide audience, as is evidenced on songs such as
“Dreamboat Annie” and “How Deep It Goes” (and, later on, other hits such as
“What About Love” and “These Dreams”).
Heart still records and performs today and, in addition to
their own efforts, they continue to mentor Seattle-area bands who’ve come to
their Bad Animals studio to lay down tracks for their own records. Some of
these bands include Alice in
Chains, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.
