How do you follow up the best-selling album in the history
of recorded music? Released in August, 1987 on Epic Records, Bad was nearly five
years in the making and, as the result of Jackson's efforts and the
voraciousness of his fans world-wide, it also set records, being the first and
only album to feature five #1 singles - "I Just Can't Stop Loving
You", "Bad", "The
Way You Make Me Feel", "Man in the Mirror" and "Dirty
Diana". Two other tracks cracked
the Top 20 - "Smooth Criminal" (#7) and "Another Part of
Me" (#11).
Jackson wrote most of the record's songs, and the record was
the final collaboration with Quincy Jones, with Jackson taking on the role of
producer (and working with others, such as Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis and Teddy
Riley) on his recorded efforts going forward.
The album, ranked #202 in the Rolling Stone Magazine list of
the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, went on to win two Grammy Awards
(including one for Best Music Video) and sold in massive quantities, with over
8 million copies sold in the U.S. and over 30 million world-wide.
