#17 on Rolling Stone Magazine’s "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time" (and featuring a cover that was voted #3 in VH1’s “Greatest Album Covers of All Time” poll), Nirvana’s 1991 sophomore release Nevermind blew the doors open for “the Seattle sound” and grunge when it was released in 1991. Produced by Butch Vig, the record set the standard for loud rock music for the 1990s, and most of the songs on the album are now considered rock classics, including the amazing singles “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, “Lithium” and “Come As You Are” grabbing the attention of rock fans worldwide.

The record topped both the Billboard “Top 200 Albums” and “Heat Seekers” charts, and sold over 3 million copies in less than 6 months. The record’s cover, showing a naked 3-month-old baby swimming in a pool behind a dollar bill on a fish hook, sparked a fair amount of controversy between the band and their label, Geffen Records, who wanted to release the album penis-free. Cobain objected and accused anyone who was offended as being sick and perverted, although he agreed to allow the record to be sold in certain areas with a strategically-placed sticker included.
