Recorded in Atlanta (far from their Chicago home base) in late 1992-early 1993 and produced by studio wiz Butch Vig, Siamese Dream, the band’s second album, catapulted Smashing Pumpkins to the top of the “alt-rock” rankings. The band’s members had each been dealing with personal demons – depression, suicide, and lots of drug use, particularly by drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, who disappeared a number of times during the albums recording sessions.

Front man and principal song-writer Billy Corgan proved to be an incredibly focused (and some say, tyrannical) leader as he worked himself ceaselessly for 4 months, often doing re-takes by himself just to keep things on track (in his mind). The music was far from their more punk-oriented past work, incorporating progressive, metal and traditional hard rock elements into many of the most-effective songs on the record.

In spite of all of the internal distractions, the record, with its hits “Today”, “Rocket” and “Disarm”, premiered at #10 in the Billboard album charts and has sold over 4 million copies in the U.S., supported by heavy music video rotations and their ongoing success through the rest of the 1990s. In late-breaking news, after numerous side-projects, Corgan announced in late 2006 that members of the band, which had splintered, were going back into the studio to record some new music in 2007.
