Purple, the second full-length release by the Stone Temple Pilots, scored big in 1994 with mainstream audiences who couldn’t get enough of both the bands radio-friendly rock songs (including the hits “Interstate Love Song”, “Big Empty” and “Vaseline”) and of the details of lead singer Scott Weiland’s ongoing battle with drug addiction and multiple arrests.
After winning a Grammy Award early in 1994 for “Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocal” for the song “Plush” from their first LP Core, their popularity continued to build when “Interstatue Love Song” was featured in the soundtrack of the hit movie The Crow.
The new record debuted at #1 and had sold over 3 million copies in less than 4 months – not bad for an album that took less than a month to record! Unfortunately, as Weiland’s troubles continued to grow, the band found it impossible to continue, and broke up in 1995. They regrouped later, then broke up, etc., with Weiland later finding success with his new “supergroup”, Velvet Revolver.
