September 1969 release on Capitol Records

Their final studio record, Abbey Road shows the Beatles at their peak and at the end of the road for them as a collective force in rock music.  Nearly every song is a classic, as is the cover photo shot by photographer Ian MacMillan, which was shot one August morning while he was perched on a ladder in front of EMI’s studios on Abbey Road in London.

Attempting to capture the band mid-stride (while all of their legs were in an inverted “V” shape), police had to stop traffic while the band walked back and forth in the pedestrian crossing there until the perfect shot was taken.

This image also fueled the ongoing controversy as to whether Paul was dead, as he’s seen in bare feet, walking out of step, etc.. Later on, Paul even satirized the image by having MacMillan shoot a similar one (accompanied by his sheepdog) that was used as the cover of his 1993 concert album titled Paul is Live.

Like many Beatles fans, yours truly has made the pilgrimage to this spot and have a photo of myself and my wife crossing the street in that crosswalk (I’ll post this some day, I’m certain). MacMillan continued to work with individual Beatles on photographs for various recordings (John Lennon’s Working Class Hero: The Definitive Collection set released in 2005 and for Yoko Ono’s Rising release in 1995 are two examples) and continued his work as a teacher until retirement. He died in 2006.
