Considered to be the leading psychedelic photographer, Karl Ferris met with Jimi Hendrix in 1967 through his manager, Chas Chandler. Karl received the compliment of a lifetime when Hendrix remarked to him, on seeing his portfolio “ You‘re doing with photography what I’m doing with music, going far out beyond the limits”.
His images appeared on all three U.S. album covers released during Hendrix’s short life - Are You Experienced?, Axis: Bold As Love and Electric Ladyland (and later Smash Hits and The Jimi Hendrix Experience Box Set released in 2000).
For this particular album, and reflecting the pop-culture styles of the era, artist Roger Law created an Indian-influenced, psychedelically-colored design using this Ferris photo as the centerpiece. It is said that while he loved Ferris's photo, he was less-than-pleased with how label executives had adapted it for this use.

The album featured the Experience's best ensemble playing to that date, shown in such great cuts as "Spanish Castle Magic", "Castles Made of Sand", and the beautiful "Little Wing".
