This design was a collaboration between photographer Karl Ferris and psychedelic artist Bob Masse and is based on an original photograph taken by Ferris while he was the official photographer for London's famous Saville Theatre. Masse then skillfully recreates the "look and feel" of the times with visually arresting border and lettering treatments.
While only touring and recording together for 3 years, the musical output of the trio of Jimi Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding was truly astounding in its influence. 2 records in 1967 (Are You Experienced? and Axis: Bold As Love) and one in 1968 (Electric Ladyland) established the group (and Hendrix in particular) as the standard-bearers of psychedelic rock music.
The concert at London's Royal Albert Hall was performed on Feb. 24, 1969, and Hendrix disbanded the group in June of that same year. The performance was filmed and recorded as it was to be turned into a film, but only the audio recording was officially released (for a short while) by Eric Burdon's Risin' Sun label as The Jimi Hendrix Experience Live At Royal Albert Hall. It is one of the most-bootlegged Hendrix recordings.
