Released on Casablanca Records in 1974, the band’s second album was recorded in
Los Angeles, far from the band members’ homes in
New York and one of their least-liked places to be. This resulted in a mood for the record that was darker than their first and also showcased each of the bandmember’s songwriting abilities (including the drummer, Ace Frehley, who wrote “
Strange Ways” and “Parasite”).

The album’s fantastic, manga-influenced artwork features the design/photographic work by the team of John Van Hamersveld and Norman Seeff. Rumor has it that the photos captured the band in various states of inebriety, with Paul Stanley most-certainly looking as though he needed the most support to stay upright during the photo session. Ace Frehley’s front-cover image was also touched up as he came to the session without make-up (his face still healing from a recent accident).

The Japanese character for “power” was introduced here at the bottom-center of the design, and this character would reappear later in many forms on the band’s recorded and stage imagery.
