Formed on Long Island, NY, in 1982 and quickly signed to Def Jam Records by Rick Rubin (after hearing a Chuck D demo), Public Enemy were the standard-bearers in the growth of rap music in the late 1980s, releasing such critically-acclaimed records as 1987's Yo! Bum Rush The Show, 1988's It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back and the amazing Fear of a Black Planet. Their lyrics hit the Establishment hard, holding a light to what the group considered the ongoing (and blatant) unfairness of the treatment of Blacks in the U.S. Their hit song "Fight The Power" became the theme song for Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing and went on to become one of the most-revered of all hip-hop songs (and pissed off Elvis fans everywhere). Public Enemy also helped shepherd in the digital music revolution by being the first major group to release a commercial album in the MP3 format.

Chuck D (the D stands for "Dangerous") - considered the leader of the group, had originally studied graphic arts in college (his designs were featured on Public Enemy releases), but it was the political and social consciousness that he brought to his rap lyrics - along with a powerful rap vocal style - that established him as among the best at his craft. Still active politically (he hosts Unfiltered on Air America Radio and lectures constantly on "Rap, Race, Reality & Technology"), he has also continued to lead in the effort to bring the music industry - kicking and screaming - into the Digital Age, and has testified before Congress as an authority on the subject.

Flava Flav (originally performing by the name MC DJ Flavor) - classically-trained pianist, drummer, originator of the stuttering rap style, and the one who served as comic foil ("Yeaah Boooy!") to Chuck D's in-your-face rap style, Flava Flav helped establish early the importance of physical style for rap performers. With his huge clock necklace, even bigger sunglasses, brightly-colored clothing and, on occassion, a modified Viking hat, he has stayed in the media spotlight for 20 years, most recently as the star of his own reality series Strange Love (how real, the jury is still out on), about his relationship with Brigitte Nielsen.
