Guitarist Steve Howe’s debut on Yes’s third album was well-received by prog rock fans, as his stellar work on “The Clap” (a solo that proved to be a crowd favorite for years) as well as “Perpetual Change”, “Starship Trooper”, “I’ve Seen All Good People” and “Yours Is No Disgrace” cemented his standing as one of rock’s finest axemen. It was also keyboardist Tony Kaye’s last album (being replaced by Rick Wakeman) until he returned in 1983 for 90125.

Their most-successful record on Atlantic Records to that date, the platinum-selling record reached a respectable #40 on the U.S. record charts in 1971 (reaching #4 in their native U.K.) and set the stage for their recording and touring successes to follow.

The album’s photography was by photographers Barry Wentzell and Phil Franks. On an “interesting bit of trivia” note, the record was recorded in a farmhouse belonging to Langley Studios. Steve Howe was so impressed with the Devonshire location that he ultimately bought the farmhouse and makes his home there! Also, if you look carefully, you’ll see Tony Kaye’s foot in a cast (he’d injured it in an auto accident shortly before the photo shoot).
