One of the band's most-successful releases, Animals was released in early 1977 and, at the height of hits popularity, hit #3 and #2, respectfully, in the U.S. and U.K. album charts. A "concept record" penned mostly by Roger Waters (with the exception of the nearly side-long "Dogs", which was jointly written by guitarist David Gilmour), it has sold steadily since its release, with over 4 million copies bought by fans worldwide. The animal-themed imagery produced in support the record included what is perhaps their best-known icon (conceived by Roger Waters) - The Pink Floyd Pig.

According to designer Storm Thorgerson, the 35-foot-long, helium-filled pig was strung between two towers of the Battersea Power Station on the river Thames. During the second day of shooting (Dec. 3, 1976 - a day that will live in album cover infamy), the pig broke free of its mooring ropes and sailed away into the flight path of airplanes landing at Heathrow Airport. Tracked by the RAF and radar, the pig finally touched down in a field and, after minor repairs, the pig was returned to active duty, with the final image being composed from the images shot by a number of participating photographers. Since then, the pig has made a number of appearances during Pink Floyd concerts and on other recordings, including The Wall and Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd.

Drummer Nick Mason added touches of his own artistry to the Animals package as he supplied the handwriting used for the lyrics included on the record's inner sleeve and the lettering on the illustrated record labels.
