According to Piper - The best thing about Kasabian is that they are total Rock Stars - they are up for anything! This photo was an idea I had along with Roger from Swindle (magazine) - it was my idea, but I have to admit I kinda bit it from Dan Monick (http://www.dmonick.com/) - I mean, shooting rock bands as other rock bands, it’s kind of his thing, but now I guess it’s mine, too.
Anyway, in 2004, we wanted to do a fashion spread for Swindle of “Modern Bands” as other bands they love...and which band would say “no” to dressing up as The Beatles with dead babies and meat all over them? If I was in a band, I’d do it! The jackets they were wearing are worth over $1000 each. We had to be SUPER careful not to get any meat blood and goo on them (otherwise, we’d be screwed!), so we wrapped the meat in plastic and very carefully placed it around them. It worked out well, thank God.
One guy was missing because he was on the phone to New York with his fiancé most of the time, so I think he was outside making plans for his wedding most of the time. I ended up running into Kasabian in New York later on that year, and they were just as friendly, funny, and slightly Hooligan-ish as English boys can get. The best part was I made all of them pose with my little Chihuahua, Twig. Here is one of those shots...SO CUTE!
Kasabian is a rock band from Leicester, U.K. The band members met while attending Leysland High School and Countesthorpe Community College. The band takes their name from Linda Kasabian, the young girl who was part of the Charles Manson gang and who drove the escape car after the insidious Tate murders. Also, “Kasabian” means “butcher” in the Armenian language – a handy tie-in for the theme chosen for this portrait.
