Offered today is a photograph of Barbra Streisand at the Back to Broadway Listening Performance benefiting Broadway Cares at the Eugene O’Neill Theater in New York City on May 13, 1993.
In 1993, Barbra released a follow-up to her successful 1985 The Broadway Album titled Back To Broadway. The record hit the top of the record charts in the U.S. (and to #4 in the UK) and went on to multi-platinum sales (over 3 million copies worldwide). The record tapped into the Sondheim, Rogers and Hammerstein, Gershwin and Lloyd-Weber songbooks and featured duets with Michael Crawford (on “Music of the Night” from the Phantom of the Opera) and Johnny Mathis on a medley from West Side Story.
BROADWAY CARES/Equity Fights AIDS is the nation's leading industry based HIV/AIDS fund-raising and grant-making organization. Streisand herself is involved in many philanthropic endeavors through The Streisand Foundation, which was established in 1986 and has since given millions of dollars in grants to a wide variety of organizations, most-recently including the Natural Resources Defense Council, the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund, the Institute for America's Future, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the Center for Public Integrity, and the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
