ICON Collectibles - a unit of Sony Music Entertainment - is proud to introduce its Canvas Album Cover Art Collection, featuring licensed reproductions of some of the world's most-recognizable covers from your favorite artists.

The cover of Santana's 1971 release features an image excerpted from one of artist Mati Klarwein's fantastic paintings, called "Annunciation". The stylized logo and lettering were done by artist/designer (and Klarwein apprentice) Robert Venosa (who later designed the cover for Santana's 1978 release SILVER DREAMS & GOLDEN REALITY).

As Mati Klarwein tells it - "'Annunciation' was the first painting that I painted after my initial New York awakening. I was 28 years old and at the peak of my bio-energy...It features my girlfriend, Jill, as the Virgin Mary, me as Saint Joseph, grimacing Fulani cow herders from the Sahel as the three kings, and Buddha the elephant inseminating his own mother...

The girl that posed for the red angel, one knee on chair, hand holding a string hanging from a ceiling, is a muscular peasant girl who was also, like Jill, from Guadaloupe. No, she was not a dancer - she acquired those muscles carrying vegetables to the town market."

You'll also note that Klarwein included himself again in this painting - that's him with the hat and sunglasses.

Santana's all-time best-selling album shows just how varying his influences were at that time in San Francisco - the album includes a compelling mix of jazz, blues, salsa, and rock.
