While at a masquerade party in 1972, when everyone seemed to be on another planet, Mouse and Kelley looked at each other and simultaneously smashed their hands to their foreheads in spastic disbelief. This was the birth of the Ice Cream Kid.

Stanley came up with the drawing the next day and it soon became a beloved image to Deadheads far and wide.
