1971’s Electric Warrior was the 2nd album by the U.K.
rock band T. Rex and was, as credited by many, the record that launched the
“glam” (“sleaze with a beat”) rock rage in the U.K. (and then world-wide). A
must-have for anyone looking to build a complete early rock retrospective, the
record was voted #160 in Rolling Stone
Magazine’s 2003 list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”.
Fronted by guitarist Marc Bolan,
whose guitar-playing and song-writing prowess, campy-yet-catchy lyricism and
talents as a music and fashion tastemaker brought him world-wide fame, the
record and its associated imagery went on to influence nearly every aspect of
youth culture from the early 1970s on forward.
A huge hit in the U.K.
(#1 on the charts and the year’s top-selling LP), the record contained the
band’s only Top 10/U.S. hit, “Bang A Gong (Get It On)”. More recently, the
track “Cosmic Dancer” was used in the opening credits for the film Billy
Elliot.
About the artist/designer, Aubrey Powell –
This U.K. born and trained designer was part of the world-renowned Hipgnosis
design studio (partnered with Storm Thorgerson and Peter Christoperson).
Hipgnosis was responsible for many of the best-known LP/CD covers, including
works for Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Peter Gabriel, Black Sabbath and many, many
others. Along with the T. Rex design featured here, Powell’s designs also
include Houses of the Holy for Led
Zeppelin and Animals for Pink Floyd.
About the photographer, Kieron
“Spud” Murphy – In addition to the cover photo
for T. Rex’s Electric Warrior album,
Mr. Murphy is perhaps better-known for his intimate, behind-the-scenes
portraits of John Lennon and Yoko Ono at home in London, taken during the
recording of Lennon’s Imagine album.
A talented musician as well, Murphy played with the Irish folk-rock band
Horslips.
