One of the earliest of the "new wave" of performers and songwriters in the U.K., Parker's early works with The Rumour (first in the U.S. on Mercury and then on Arista) was praised by critics and fans alike for its wit, energy and in-your-face spirit. His 1979 album "Squeezing Out The Sparks" has been included on most every major publications "Top 500 Albums of All Time" listings (most recently - in 2003 - Rolling Stone magazine had it at #335).

While problems with his record labels (listen to the 1979 song "Mercury Poisoning" for some insight into that failed relationship) might have prohibited him from enjoying the same degree of commercial success as others who followed (Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, etc.), Parker continued to write and perform music in a wide variety of styles, but the essence of his songs always has been (and, I'm assuming, will continue to be) about the daily struggles of everyday life and how frustrating (and funny) they can be, but you have to DO SOMETHING about it if you want it to get better.

An excellent attitude to have today, if you ask me...
