With “producer” Andy Warhol’s financial backing giving this NYC-based group the freedom to create, when “the banana album” aka The Velvet Underground and Nico was released in 1967, people weren’t quite sure what to make of it – it was that different and startling in so many aspects. All these years later, it is still referenced as the record that “alternative” artists and styles (including “goth”, “glam”, “punk” and “noise” music) grew and drew their inspiration from.

While John Cale recalled that while it was producer Tom Wilson’s expertise that guided their efforts, it was Andy Warhol’s fame and his controversial banana print on the cover (which, in early copies, could be peeled back to reveal a flesh-colored banana underneath – cool!), as well as their superb musical performances, that drew fans to this most-influential rock masterpiece.

Will someone tell me who the #*!% was Nico? Was she one of those licorice-flavored wafer candies I used to get in a roll?
