Jim McCrary biography -

Born and raised in Los Angeles County, Jim McCrary has been a professional photographer there for nearly 50 years. Primarily self-taught (beginning in 1952), he also attended Pasadena City College and the Art Center College of Design, majoring in photography. He worked for many years as staff photographer for the Jerry O'Brien Studio, the Fred Poore Studio and in the photography department of Rockwell International during the 1950's and 60's.

Jim then A&M Records in 1967 as their chief photographer where, in the next seven years, he shot over 300 album covers, along with related publicity and advertising work. Among his many classic album covers are Carole King's "Tapestry", Joe Cocker's "Mad Dogs & Englishmen", Lee Michaels' "5th", The Flying Burrito Brothers' "Burrito Deluxe" and many others.

From 1974 through 1990, Jim operated his own studio on LaBrea Blvd. in Hollywood, specializing in technically-difficult photographic still-life assignments, as well as difficult personality portraits. He continues to be a leading photographer on the cutting edge of both traditional and digital-based photograhic arts, serving as a freelance digital photography consultant working closely with clients primarily from the Glendale/Burbank media district.
