Piper Ferguson was raised in Petaluma, California, just north of San Francisco. After studying Film and Spanish at San Francisco State University, she went on to study and work in Salamanca, Spain. After graduating, she returned to Madrid to teach English and travel.
Piper then moved to Los Angeles, where she started art directing music videos, commercials and features. When Piper’s friend Shalyce Benfell moved to LA from San Francisco in 1996, the pair started a Brit Pop/Mod club reminiscent of the spots they missed in SF. Their club - Café Bleu - evolved into a showcase for bands like The Dandy Warhols, BRMC and Maroon5 - who graced the venue’s small stage. They now run Club BANG!, Southern California’s pre-eminent Indie/pop/mod club, which draws upwards of 1200 dance-loving souls weekly.
It wasn’t long before the musicians she met in her clubs began offering her jobs directing music videos. Intrigued by cameras and lighting, Piper sought to supplement her love of directing music videos by learning photography. From a local thrift store, she bought a series of books on photography that Kodak had published in the 1970's series and taught herself the basic tricks of the trade. It was in that D.I.Y. process that she discovered a new passion.
Piper rapidly starting shooting artists like Coldplay, Hot Hot Heat, The Shins, Modest Mouse, Beck and Joe Strummer. Her editorial client list expanded to include Levi's, Diesel, Filter Magazine, Swindle and Mojo, just to name a few.
In March 2005 she exhibited her photography at a special Levi's/Fader/Urban Outfitters suite at SXSW in Austin, TX, to great success and was then asked to participate in the Subliminal Projects Show on July 9 with artist Sheppard Fairey of “Obey/Swindle” fame. In January 2007, Jutzapoz Magazine highlighted her works in a multi-page feature titled “Music’s Eye Spy”.
Piper is currently working on a documentary "Our Time", based on the rise of the indie music scene, as well as on an accompanying coffee table book of photography.
